From the start, director Julio Medem does a fantastic job to set the mood of an uneasy atmosphere by giving the film a darker, almost sepia tone, setting us up for the bumpy emotional ride ahead. However, the problem I found with Sex And Lucia is that it becomes all too fluid with its portrayal of different time periods. His writings reveal the tale of a one-night stand years earlier with Elena Nimri from "Lovers of the Arctic Circle" , who runs the boarding house Lucia holes up in and who, unbeknown to Lorenzo, gave birth to a daughter, Luna, after their brief encounter. And everything revolves around sex, from procreation to pornography, portrayed in the sort of unembarrassed, explicit detail in vogue in European arthouse releases these days. She receives a phone call from the police while finding a suicide note, and is so afraid of bad news that she hangs up, assuming the worst. Lorenzo is having casual sex in the ocean, on a bright moon-lit night, with a beautiful married woman he just met named Elena. The score is also part of the artistic nature of the film. Its intricate story leaves the straight and narrow early on, only to curve neatly back onto itself by the end. He anonymously contacts Elena, who has moved to the island to find solace and recall better days, and provides her a nice story about a beautiful child that loves to swim in the sea, to cheer her spirits. After both women discover that Lorenzo isn't dead, the three characters cope with and finally understand the entanglements of their interwoven relationships. They part ways, expecting to never see each other again.
